Plot summary
Maggie has not seen her twin brother Milo in ten years when a hospital calls to tell her that he has tried to kill himself. She visits him in Los Angeles and asks him to come stay with her; he agrees and meets her husband Lance. Lance says the two of them are trying for a baby, which comes as news to Milo. Milo, who waits tables and tells people he is an actor, looks up Rich, his former high school English teacher, at a bookstore. Maggie takes scuba lessons with an instructor named Billy. Their mother Judy arrives from an insight retreat, and Milo notices how little she wants to do with her children.

- The lip-sync scene in The Skeleton Twins was first planned around Wilson Phillips's "Hold On", but because that song was already a focal point in Bridesmaids, Craig Johnson spent 24 hours listening to cheesy mid-80s ballads and lip syncing in the mirror to pick a replacement.
- The script went through several iterations, including one in which Milo was a drag queen and the film played more like a road trip movie, before Craig Johnson settled on a low-key approach inspired by Hal Ashby and Alexander Payne.
- Principal photography in Brooklyn lasted just 22 days, and although a full script was written, Craig Johnson encouraged improvisation; an improvised conversation between Kristen Wiig and Luke Wilson about Vibram shoes was his single favorite scene.
