Plot summary
Carmen Lowell works backstage on a play at Yale while her lifelong friends Lena Kaligaris, Bridget Vreeland and Tibby Rollins finish their first year of college and make plans for a summer apart. Julia, the play's lead actress, invites Carmen to a Vermont actor workshop, and there Ian, a performer in the company, urges her to audition for The Winter's Tale. Lena travels to Greece to mourn her grandfather Bapi and runs into her ex-boyfriend Kostas. Missing her mother, Bridget joins an archaeological dig in Turkey. Tibby stays in New York, working at a video store and repeating a screenwriting class at NYU that will not pass her until she finishes her script.
