Plot summary
Idilia Dubb, a dreamer in the 19th-century Middle Rhine Valley, comes to her senses inside a ruined castle with her memory gone. She cannot remember how she was hurt. The castle walls are far too high for her to climb, there is no escaping them, and she must find a way to survive on her own inside the ruins. The diary she carries is the one way she has of deciphering the past. Its entries blur the line between what happened and what she imagined. Her fiancé, Franz Hagerberg, runs a human zoo exhibition, and the Abyssinian actor Caven performs in it.

- The film's story is drawn from the legend of 17-year-old Idilia Dubb of Edinburgh, said to have starved to death in 1851 on a tower of Lahneck Castle, her remains and diary found only twelve years later. The tale is most likely a literary invention of Rhine Romanticism rather than a real event.
