Plot summary
George Hardy's flock lives by two beliefs: that death exists only in fiction, and that sheep turn into clouds when their lives end. An orphaned lamb born in winter, not spring, is kept at a distance. Then the shepherd is found dead outside his trailer on his farm near Denbrook. Elliot Matthews, a junior reporter, calls it murder and pushes Tim Derry, the village's only police officer, to investigate; Tim decides poison was used. Lily, a ewe with a taste for crime stories, leads the flock's own inquiry, helped by Mopple, who forgets nothing, and Sebastian, a ram George once brought home from a carnival.

- Screenwriter Craig Mazin first encountered Leonie Swann's sheep-detective novel in 2007 when producer Lindsay Doran brought it to him, and he said he was "enchanted by how smart, moving and philosophical it was."
- Producer Lindsay Doran spent nearly a decade securing the rights to the novel before Craig Mazin wrote his first draft for a studio in 2016.
- After the original studio passed on the project, Amazon MGM Studios executive Courtenay Valenti, who already knew the script, bought it for her own company instead.
- The Sheep Detectives closes on the 1988 song “I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)” by The Proclaimers, remixed by Kriz Kovacs, with the score composed by Christophe Beck.
