Dave Barry
Biography
Born in New York City, Dave Barry was an American actor and comedian who started in radio and cartoon voice work as a teenager. He built a career as a stand-up comic, performed in the Catskills and for troops during World War II, and became a Las Vegas club entertainer. In Hollywood, he voiced characters for Warner Bros., Disney, and other studios, including the villainous Bluto in six Popeye cartoons, and was known for impersonating celebrities in Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies shorts such as Hollywood Steps Out (1941). He also appeared in films, including Ladies of the Chorus (1948) with Marilyn Monroe and Some Like It Hot (1959) as band manager Mister Beinstock, and in Spinout (1966). On television, he guest-starred on series like Green Acres, Get Smart, and I Dream of Jeannie. He died in 2001.

Big break
Barry got the job voicing Popeye's nemesis Bluto after a man from Famous Studios heard his stand-up act at a Miami hotel in 1942 and approached him at the bar.
First role
At just 18, Dave Barry was hired by Leon Schlesinger, the Warner Bros. mogul, and became a much sought-after animation voice actor in the mid 1930s. In The Coo-Coo Nut Grove, a 1936 Hollywood-themed cartoon, he voiced Ned Sparks.
Own stunts
Dave Barry was known for his uncanny impressions of stars of the era, such as Groucho Marx, Humphrey Bogart, Cary Grant, James Cagney and Clark Gable, performing them with gusto in many Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies cartoons.
Beyond film
In 1966, Barry was the headliner of the Desert Inn variety musical show "Hello America", and afterward of "Hooray for Hollywood". Vegas extravaganza king Donn Arden produced both shows.
