Plot summary
María lives in a small village on Illa de Arousa, in Galicia, in 1971. She works the shellfish beds of the island for her living. She is also the midwife of the village, and she performs abortions there. After an unexpected event, she has to leave the island of Arousa. Her route out of Galicia crosses the Portuguese border by the smuggling paths.
