Biography

Helmut Berger was an Austrian actor who became one of European cinema's stars in the late 1960s and 1970s, known for narcissistic and sexually ambiguous roles. Born in Bad Ischl, Austria, he trained in acting in London after moving there as a young man and later moved to Rome. Luchino Visconti gave him his first film role in Le streghe (1967). In Visconti's The Damned (1969), he played Martin von Essenbeck, a role that brought him international recognition and a Golden Globe nomination. He played the title role in Dorian Gray and appeared in The Garden of the Finzi-Continis (1970). His performance as King Ludwig II in Visconti's Ludwig (1973) won him a David di Donatello award. Later films included Conversation Piece (1974), The Romantic Englishwoman (1975), and The Godfather: Part III (1990). He also worked on television and in theater, and received a Teddy Award in 2007 for his career.

First role
In 1964 Berger met the film director Luchino Visconti, who cast him in his first acting role in the 1967 film Le streghe, in the episode "La Strega Bruciata Viva."
First role
Berger's first stage role came in 2018, when he starred with Ingrid Caven in Albert Serra's play Liberte at the Volksbuhne theater in Berlin.
Big break
Berger became known worldwide for playing Martin von Essenbeck in Visconti's The Damned (1969). In his best-known scene there, he pretends to be Marlene Dietrich from The Blue Angel (1930).
