Plot summary
Luo Yusheng comes back from the city to his village in North China when his father, the village teacher, dies. His mother, Zhao Di, wants the old customs kept: the coffin must be carried the whole way home on foot, so that her husband's spirit can find the road. Yusheng works out how to arrange the procession, since few young men remain in the village. As he does, he remembers how his parents met. Luo Changyu had come from the city to teach in the village, and Zhao Di, then a young woman, was drawn to him.
