Plot summary

Major General Lei Yifang leads his Nationalist troops against the Imperial Japanese Army in Manchuria during World War II. Yan Shikun, an ethnic Chinese medic conscripted into the Japanese ranks, is taken prisoner and sent to a camp in Fengtian. Years later, with the civil war resumed, Yu Zhen, poor and illiterate, takes work as an orderly in a Shanghai hospital run by the Nationalists while she waits on Yang Tianhu, her boyfriend away fighting the Communists. General Lei meets Zhou Yunfen, a wealthy debutante, at a charity event and marries her months later. Sergeant Tong Daqing pays Yu and a borrowed baby to pose with him for a photograph that will pass as proof of marriage and earn his parents extra rations. Pregnant, Zhou prepares to leave for Taiwan.
