Plot summary
In 1860s China, the Taiping Rebellion has set imperial and rebel armies against each other. Pang Qingyun commands an imperial battalion and is the only man left alive after a battle, wounded. A young woman and two other men save him; the men, Zhao Erhu and Jiang Wuyang, run a bandit gang in a village close by. Pang joins their raid on a rebel convoy for food. Imperial troops take those supplies for themselves, and the villagers, poor and hungry, accept Pang's idea of a militia that will fight for the imperial side to end the rebellion. The three men seal a blood oath, swearing loyalty to one another on pain of death. Pang also begins an affair with Liansheng, who is married to Zhao.
