Plot summary
Nineteen-year-old Songlian, left bankrupt when her father dies, is married into the wealthy Chen family as the Fourth Mistress. She is greeted with foot massages and lit red lanterns, then learns that the treatment is not permanent: the master picks one wife each day, and the one he chooses gets the lanterns, the massage, her choice of dishes and the servants' respect. The First Mistress, Yuru, is about the master's age and bore a son long ago. The Second Mistress, Zhuoyun, gives Songlian silk and warns her about the Third Mistress, Meishan, a former opera singer. Songlian's maid, Yan'er, resents her.
