Plot summary
Rocket scientist Dr. Bragan works at NASA on a mission to outer space. The strain of the mission brings on a mental breakdown, and his assistant, Dr. Paul Nakamura, offers him a rest at his abandoned luxury resort in Japan. Bragan accepts and flies there, settling into the defunct hotel with Dr. Noriko Hanamura, Nakamura's cousin, who becomes his assistant. In the hotel's secluded greenhouse, Bragan pursues a botany experiment meant to show that humans evolved from plants. He grafts a potted Venus flytrap brought from America onto a Japanese carnivorous oceanic plant, and the hybrid that results grows humanoid and needs the blood of mammals to flourish.
