Plot summary
Luke is sailing a yacht to a customer in Indonesia. He has asked his friend Matt, Matt's girlfriend Suzie, Matt's sister Kate, and a fellow sailor named Warren to make the trip with him. The route crosses a coral reef, and on the second day the yacht hits the reef, loses its keel and capsizes, letting water in. The current pushes them farther from land. Luke collects supplies from the overturned hull and wants the group to swim to Turtle Island, which he puts twelve miles away. Warren will not enter water he believes is full of sharks, so he stays on the hull. Suzie and Matt enter the sea with Luke, and Kate follows after hesitating at first.

- The Reef is based on the real ordeal of Ray Boundy, who was the only survivor when a boat he was on suffered a similar shark-infested capsizing in 1983.
- While the film was still shooting, director Andrew Traucki streamed cameras from the set live online, saying original marketing like this was vital because the Australian film industry rarely backs unconventional promotion; he built the whole live-stream setup himself with his own web team.
- Tourism officials publicly worried the film would hurt the region's image: Rob Gaison of Tourism Tropical North Queensland objected to it being marketed as "based on a true story," and Col McKenzie of the Association of Marine Park Operators pointed to earlier shark films like Open Water as having already damaged reef tourism.
