Plot summary
A man who goes by the name the Rambler is out of prison and returns to the home he shares with his girlfriend, Cheryl. The life he left behind will not take him back. Cheryl tells him she is pregnant by another man, and the two split. The Rambler's brother runs a ranch in Oregon and has offered him a job and somewhere to live, so the Rambler decides to accept and head west. He hitchhikes across the American West, along back roads and through isolated towns, and runs into one eccentric, threatening stranger after another. The further he travels, the more surreal the journey becomes.

- Calvin Reeder planned to shoot The Rambler on Super 16 mm, but after the production was required to obtain a completion bond, the added expense left no funds for film stock and processing, so it switched to digital cinematography.
- Calvin Reeder said he never intended to reprise the title role he had played in his 2008 short and expected another actor to take it. Filmmaker David Gordon Green personally contacted Dermot Mulroney on Reeder's behalf.
- Dermot Mulroney read the screenplay and stayed attached to The Rambler even after its financing temporarily collapsed, a gap Calvin Reeder said lasted roughly nine months.
