Plot summary

A family of settlers, Duncan and Susanna McKaskel with their twelve-year-old son Tom, is heading across Wyoming Territory in 1876. Cholera has struck their wagon train, and the family has left it behind. In a small, run-down town they stop to ask a man called Doc Shabbitt for directions. McKaskel senses danger in the building Shabbitt offers them, so they move on, and Shabbitt's gang takes two of their horses. Con Vallian, a frontiersman whose Blackfoot mother was killed by the Ute's tribe, is tracking the Ute, a mixed-race Native American who has just joined Shabbitt's gang. He tells the McKaskels their horses are gone, and when Duncan rides back to town to reclaim them, Vallian follows unseen.
