Plot summary

A drifter lies unconscious beside a West Texas highway until David Martin, a preacher bound for the town of Bevel to take up a new post, picks him up. At a quarry on the way, the drifter kills him and continues to Bevel in his place, claiming to be the preacher at the house where Martin was to stay. Celia, the girlfriend of Chief John Moore, gives him room and board. The congregation comes to like his sermons because he does not judge them. Celia's cousins, Valentin and Poco, grow marijuana at the quarry. Moore, of the three-man sheriff's department, suspects the man but cannot prove anything.
