Plot summary
Ginny Larsen, a young girl, is found dead on the evening of Jerry Black's retirement party in Reno. The detective drives to the scene with Stan Krolak, then tells Ginny's parents. Her mother, Margaret, holds up a cross the child made and asks Jerry to promise he will find whoever did it. A suspect is arrested the next day and the case is closed. Jerry has doubts about the arrest, and he gives up the tickets his captain, Pollack, gave him for a Mexican fishing trip. He visits Ginny's grandmother, Annalise Hansen. Annalise recalls the stories she and Ginny read together, one about an angel who carries a dead child over the places it loved.

SPOILER
Tom Noonan recalled that when Battlefield Earth flopped the film's backers were so freaked out that they pressed Sean Penn to finish on time and under budget, so four or five of Noonan's scenes were never shot: the ones explaining who he is, since he is not the man who killed the children.
