Plot summary
Tara Maguire gives birth to a baby boy during Sunday mass in a small Irish village in 1957 and will not say who fathered the child. Brendan Hegarty, the local policeman, and Mick, a landowner, each ask to marry her, and she turns them both down. She lives with her sister Brigid, earns money as a dressmaker, keeps chickens and carries goods across the border with Northern Ireland, which brings her into Hegarty's way. A shabby company of traveling actors, the Playboys, arrives; Tara catches one of them, Tom Casey, stealing a chicken. He pays for the bird, and the two begin to spend time together with Hegarty watching in resentment.
