Plot summary
The official account says one gunman shot Senator Charles Carroll at a campaign stop and died at the scene, with no one else involved. Six of the witnesses die over the next three years. Lee Carter, a television journalist who was there, fears she is next and asks Joe Frady, an investigative reporter in Oregon and her former boyfriend, for protection. He turns her away, and she is found dead soon after, her death ruled a suicide. Guilt over how he treated her and suspicion about her death push Frady to look into the drowning of another witness, Judge Arthur Bridges, in the small town of Salmontail. What he finds there points him toward the Parallax Corporation.
