Plot summary
In Sheepshead Bay, Vincent MacKenna drinks, smokes and bets on horses, and he owes money. His wife Sandy has Alzheimer's disease and no longer knows him; he pretends to be a doctor when he visits her and washes her clothes. His company is his cat Felix and Daka, a pregnant Russian sex worker. New neighbors move in: Maggie Bronstein, a radiology technologist who is getting divorced, and her son Oliver. Their van damages Vincent's car, and he demands payment. Oliver, bright and good-natured, is picked on at his Catholic school. He asks to wait at Vincent's house until his mother finishes work, and Vincent agrees to watch him for a fee.

- The screenplay, originally titled St. Vincent de Van Nuys, was written in 2011 by Melfi and was included on that year's Hollywood Black List, the annual roll of the best unproduced scripts.
- Jack Nicholson was rumored to star in the film, but it was Murray who signed on to take the part, in July 2012.
- St. Vincent premiered at the 2014 Toronto International Film Festival, where audiences voted it second runner-up for the festival's People's Choice Award.
