Plot summary
Georges and Anne are a couple of retired music teachers enjoying life in their eighties. However, Anne suddenly has a stroke at breakfast and their lives are never the same. That incident begins Anne's harrowingly steep physical and mental decline as Georges attempts to care for her at home as she wishes. Even as the fruits of their lives and career remain bright, the couple's hopes for some dignity prove a dispiriting struggle even as their daughter enters the conflict. In the end, George, with his love fighting against his own weariness and diminished future on top of Anne's, is driven to make some critical decisions for them both.

- The story grew out of the suicide of Haneke's 90-year-old aunt, who had raised him. She had heavy rheumatism, lived alone in her apartment rather than be placed in a nursing home, and had even asked Haneke for euthanasia.
- Haneke shelved the project after realising that the Swiss-Canadian director Léa Pool had made La dernière fugue (2010), a similar story about an old man cared for by his wife. He then worked on it only sporadically until his writer's block loosened and he finished the script quickly.
- Amour's Palme d'Or at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival made Michael Haneke the second filmmaker to win the award for consecutive films.
