Plot summary
Jill Kinmont is an 18-year-old slalom champion, a top United States prospect for the 1956 Winter Olympics. She skis with her best friend Audra Jo Nicholson, called A. J., and both hope to reach the Games. During a competition, Jill meets Dick Buek, a daredevil skier. That summer, while Jill works at her family's Rockin' K guest ranch, A. J. falls ill with polio. Jill trains hard for the rest of the summer. She wins her regional slalom races and grows close to Buddy Werner, though she still has feelings for Dick. When Dick arrives with a fiancée, Jill runs outside in tears. She and Buddy are accepted to the Snow Cap in Alta, Utah, where a strong result could secure an Olympic team place. On the course's dangerous Corkscrew section, Jill loses control and is paralyzed in the fall.
