Plot summary
As a small girl, Cristina Lopez watched an exorcism being performed on her mother. Years later she works as a reporter in Los Angeles and comes back to the Veracruz area, drawn by the La Boca ruins and by tales of sorcery and healing. She is addicted to heroin and keeps her remaining syringes with her. Her cousin Miranda comes across her at La Boca, unconscious, and carries her to a remote hut near Catemaco, where Javi and Luz, a Nahua bruja, hold her. Luz studies her face and announces that she has it; Javi makes her drink goat's milk as a purification. Chained to a bed, Cristina maintains that no demon lives in her.
