Plot summary

Jamie Waters works as a journalist in Chicago when word reaches her that her sister Anna has taken her own life in Singapore. She flies to the city and settles into Anna's house, where Anna's daughter Katie refuses to leave, holding to her mother's promise to return within seven days. Father De Silva, a Catholic priest, meanwhile reads a set of cryptic symbols as a sign of the Tower of Babel rising again. Jamie begins asking about further deaths, all called suicides, among people who knew Anna, and turns to Anna's husband, Sam Harris, as unsettling events gather around the house.
