Plot summary
Kelly, a prostitute, is run out of the big city by her pimp and takes a bus to the small town of Grantville. She has a brief encounter with Griff, the police captain, who tells her to leave and points her to a cathouse across the state line run by a madam named Candy. Kelly refuses and instead rents a room from a seamstress and goes to work nursing disabled children. Griff does not trust reformed prostitutes and keeps pressing her to go. Kelly falls for J. L. Grant, a wealthy man from the town's founding family and Griff's best friend. She tells him about her past, he accepts it, and they plan to marry.
