Plot summary
Mathilde Stangerson lives with her father, Professor Stangerson, at his castle in rural France. Late one night, gunshots come from the bedroom she keeps locked from within, the Yellow Room. Her father and Father Jacques, in the next room, hear the shots and break the door down with two employees. They find Mathilde unconscious on the floor, a pair of bullets in the ceiling and a bloodstained print on the wall, and neither man saw anyone come in or out. Joseph Rouletabille, a newspaper reporter, and his photographer Sainclair take the train to the castle, sharing it with Judge De Marquet and his clerk. Inspector Frédéric Larsan is already working the case. The Professor reports that Mathilde called off her wedding two days earlier.
