Plot summary
Ruby works as a henchman for the crime lord Vogel, and he sits in jail after hiding the loot he took from his boss, a theft he committed to get even for the killing of the woman he loved. He refuses to eat and will not speak, which worries the prison psychiatrist but does not fool the detective running the investigation. Quentin is a dim-witted small-time thief arrested after he held up a currency exchange booth, failed to get the money he wanted, and asked for directions to a bank. Moved from cell to cell because his endless talk drives each new cellmate to attack him, Quentin is put in with Ruby, and he adores the silent man.
