Plot summary
Big Ed's wife bakes a cake for his birthday while their son Ed, in the next room, sets out to clean his father's hunting rifle as a surprise. The rifle fires; the shot passes through a wall and kills Ed's mother. Big Ed returns to find the body and beats the frightened boy. Years afterward, Ed is a college student, and his father asks him to close the condominium the family owns at Atlantic Beach, North Carolina, which Big Ed uses as a clubhouse with his hunting partners. Ed's friends Linda, Mike, Ralph, Sue and Pam come along for the fall break. Unknown to the group, Big Ed is already there, waiting.

- When the distributor tried to book The Mutilator in middle American theaters in 1985, it could not get advertising or screenings because the film had no R-rating; writer-director Buddy Cooper then relented and edited it to the MPAA's specifications.
