Plot summary
Alex is a teenager living with her grandmother Anna. One winter night, Anna asks Alex to bring a hand mirror from a chest in the attic. Alex finds the mirror and a tightly shut box. When her friend Miles arrives, he opens the box and finds candles, matches, salt, old photos, and a torn page with rules for a game that calls a creature called The Midnight Man. A second page lists names, each with a drop of blood. Anna catches them and faints in terror. A family friend, Dr. Harding, examines Anna and explains how to care for her. Despite Anna's reaction, Alex and Miles put their names and a drop of blood on the list, knock on the front door at midnight, and light the candles.
