Plot summary

Bugs, captain of the hovercraft Mnemosyne, learns that the Matrix is replaying the moment Trinity first found Neo and frees a program that embodies Morpheus. In San Francisco, Thomas Anderson designs a video game series drawn from his faint memories as Neo. He keeps meeting Tiffany, a married mother who remembers nothing of her past and who inspired the game's Trinity. Thomas also runs a simulation called a Modal to build characters, and he cannot always separate waking life from dreams. His psychoanalyst gives him blue pills to keep the episodes away, though he stops taking them. Bugs and her crew work to extract Neo from the Matrix.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about The Matrix Resurrections (2021)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • After declining Warner Bros.' yearly offers to make another Matrix sequel, Lana Wachowski conceived the story of The Matrix Resurrections one sleepless night in 2019, while grieving the deaths of both her parents and a close friend. She found it comforting to have Neo and Trinity alive again.
  • The COVID-19 pandemic suspended production on March 16, 2020, and Lana Wachowski considered letting the film "go down as an incomplete legendary film not meant to be seen by anyone". The cast insisted she return and finish it until she agreed.
  • Laurence Fishburne, who played Morpheus in the original trilogy, was not asked to reprise the role; he later said he "offered his services" but that the filmmakers did not respond well to his offer.
  • Jessica Henwick won the part of Bugs while Disney was considering her to audition for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. She called it a "red-pill/blue-pill moment" and chose The Matrix Resurrections over the Marvel film.
  • Lana Wachowski said Jefferson Airplane's 1967 song "White Rabbit", used in the trailer and film, was chosen both for its Alice in Wonderland links and as a nod to the band, which was formed as a house band for the San Francisco club called The Matrix.
  • In February 2022, co-financier Village Roadshow sued Warner Bros. for breach of contract, saying the HBO Max streaming release produced "abysmal theatrical box office sales figures" and damaged the Matrix franchise. Warner Bros. called the suit a frivolous attempt to avoid a contractual commitment.
  • After Resurrections wrapped, Studio Babelsberg painted its largest soundstage, Stage 20, in rainbow colors and renamed it "Rainbow Stage" in honor of the Wachowskis, who are known for their commitment to people of diverse sexual orientations and identities.
  • Effects making space and time appear offset on screen were created with camera systems built for the film and in the volumetric studio Volucap in Babelsberg, plus the world's first volumetric underwater studio there. Volucap, a Studio Babelsberg, Fraunhofer Society and UFA venture, worked on site for two years.
