Plot summary
Billy is a shy young man in a late-20th-century American city, and Jenny Smith is the woman he meets at a nightclub. An alien anthropologist observes them for a nature documentary about human courtship, and his theories are often wildly inaccurate. Elaborate visual metaphors accompany his commentary. Billy and Jenny work through early misunderstandings, and Billy loses her phone number before they reconnect. They walk on the beach, have soulful talks, meet each other's parents and trade advice with their friends. Billy is bashful about telling Jenny he loves her, afraid of being trapped, and the pair keep taking the relationship to new levels.
