Plot summary
The Master is a writer in 1930s Moscow. The Soviet state censors his works, and the premiere of his play about Pontius Pilate is called off on ideological grounds. The Union of Soviet Writers expels him, and he becomes an outcast with no means to live. His mistress Margarita inspires him to begin a new novel that satirically recasts the people of his life. Its central figure is Woland, a mystical dark force visiting Soviet Moscow as a tourist.

- After its release, The Master and Margarita was censored without the director's knowledge: politically sensitive scenes were cut out.
- Russian nationalist activists, propagandists and Putin officials including Vladimir Solovyev, Margarita Simonyan, Zakhar Prilepin and Tigran Keosayan called the film anti-regime, anti-Putin and anti-war propaganda and demanded a criminal investigation into Lockshin; State Duma deputies called for a ban.
- By March 2024, The Master and Margarita had become the highest-grossing film ever released in Russia with an 18+ content rating, with over 2.3 billion rubles and more than 5 million admissions.
- The film won all seven Nika Awards it was nominated for, including Best Picture, while the state-sponsored Golden Eagle awards ignored it entirely because of the director's stance on the war; Nika winners had to agree not to mention the director's name.
