Plot summary
The children's coach Irina Sergeyevna Shatalina refuses at first to take Nadya Lapshina, a girl from Irkutsk, as a skating pupil. Nadya lives with her aunt Margosha, persists, and trains until Shatalina accepts her; she becomes the best pupil at the boarding school and later one of the country's leading skaters. The big league offers her a place as the partner of Vladimir Borisovich Leonov, known as Vova, and after hesitating to leave her coach she takes it. The pair are a success, and Leonov talks of marriage. During a performance he drops her, and the fall breaks her spine. She shuts herself away. A hockey forward suspended from his team, Sasha Gorin, is offered a bargain by Shatalina: he works with Nadya, and she helps him back into the game.

- The script only placed the story in a nameless provincial city, but winter photographs of Lake Baikal so impressed director Oleg Trofim that he decided to shoot in Irkutsk.
- Aglaya Tarasova had the hardest preparation of the cast, juggling dancing, figure skating, singing and diving at once, and spent nearly 12 hours filming a scene underwater in a pool.
- Aglaya Tarasova's figure skating coach on the set was Katarina Gerbold, who also served as her backup in the skating scenes.
