Plot summary
Pete Quilliam is a fisherman with no money, and Philip Christian is a well educated lawyer. The two are close friends from childhood, like brothers, and both are in love with Kate Cregeen, whose father Caesar owns the village pub. Kate enjoys having Pete as a suitor. Pete proposes, and he asks Philip to put his case to her father. Caesar refuses, since Pete is penniless. Pete decides he must go to Africa and build a fortune there so that he can be considered a fit husband, and he asks whether Kate will wait for him. At first she jokes, but then she says yes. Pete asks Philip to look after Kate while he is away.
