Anny Ondra
Biography
Anny Ondra was a Czech film actress who began her career in 1920 and worked in Czech, German, Austrian, French and English productions. Born in Tarnów, she broke through with Gilly in Prague for the First Time and spent the 1920s in Czech and Austrian films such as Pratermizzi (1926), before winning the German market with Eve's Daughters (1928) and Sinful and Sweet (1929). She took British roles in Alfred Hitchcock's The Manxman and Blackmail (both 1929), playing the first Hitchcock blonde, and Blackmail became the first English sound film, with her accent dubbed by Joan Barry. Back in Germany she formed Ondra-Lamač-Films with Karel Lamač, which lasted until 1936, and took her first self-spoken sound role in Fairground People (1930) with Sig Arno. She made about forty more sound films, the last in 1957, over ninety in all, and received the Honorary German Film Award in 1970.
