The Promised Land (2023) on Netflix

Plot summary

An impoverished officer of humble birth, Captain Ludvig Kahlen retires in 1755 after twenty-five years in the Prussian Army and obtains the Danish court's permission to cultivate the barren Jutland moorland. He asks for a noble title and a manor in return for establishing a settlement there. Frederik Schinkel, the magistrate at nearby Hald Manor, has been trying to control the moor and moves to keep workers from Kahlen. Kahlen secretly shelters Johannes Eriksen and Ann Barbara, a married couple bound to Schinkel as serf farmers, after they flee his mistreatment. Anmai Mus, a Romani girl he finds stealing from him, leads him to the Travellers' camp, and he hires them as workers, though the practice is illegal.
