Plot summary
Martin, Tommy, Peter, and Nikolaj teach at a gymnasium school in Copenhagen, where unmotivated students and stale routines have worn them down. Martin's senior class and their parents complain that he is blocking their history exams. At a dinner for Nikolaj's fortieth birthday, the friends talk about a theory from psychiatrist Finn Skårderud: people are born short of 0.05% blood alcohol, and holding that level keeps a person relaxed and creative. They agree to test it, recording their days in a shared log while drinking at regular intervals. Their rules forbid drinking after 8 p.m. or on weekends, and each man finds a way to drink during lessons or coaching. Martin feels distant from his family and his students, and Nikolaj's wife treats him with contempt.

- Thomas Vinterberg's daughter had pressed him to adapt his play into a film and was set to play the daughter of Mads Mikkelsen's character Martin; four days into filming she was killed in a car accident, and the script was reworked to become more life-affirming.
- To prepare, the four main actors and Thomas Vinterberg met to drink just enough to let go of embarrassment in front of one another, and watched drunk people on YouTube to better understand how the extremely inebriated would act.
