Plot summary
Marcus Burnett is a Miami narcotics detective with a wife, Theresa, and three children, while his partner, Mike Lowrey, is a footloose ladies' man. Their biggest career bust, $100 million in seized Mafia heroin, has been stolen from a police vault. Internal Affairs suspects an inside job and threatens to shut the department down unless the drugs are recovered in 72 hours. Mike asks Maxine Logan, an informant and his former girlfriend, to watch for people who have suddenly become rich. Maxine takes her friend Julie Mott along to a call at the home of Eddie Dominguez, a former police officer. Julie witnesses a murder there and calls the police, insisting she will speak only to Mike, whom she has never met. Captain Conrad Howard orders Marcus to pretend to be him.

- Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer first pictured Dana Carvey and Jon Lovitz as the two cops, and the script written for them carried the title Bulletproof Hearts rather than Bad Boys.
- Arsenio Hall was offered the part of Mike Lowrey and said no. He has called that the worst mistake he has ever made; the role went instead to Will Smith.
- Michael Bay disliked the script on his first feature and let Will Smith and Martin Lawrence rework it as they went, including secretly telling Smith to insult Lawrence before the car scene.
- Bay and Smith argued for half a day's shooting over the closing line "I love you, man", which Smith refused to say. With the crew ready to pack up, Bay gave in and told him to do what he liked, at which point Smith agreed to say it.
- Martin Lawrence and Will Smith were both shooting their own sitcoms, Martin and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, so the Miami shoot was squeezed into their television schedules and wrapped on 31 August. The opening sequence was only written and filmed afterwards, during post-production.
