Plot summary
Dani Trant is fourteen and the middle of three children in a Louisiana family in the summer of 1957. Her older sister Maureen is bound for college, and their mother Abigail is pregnant again, so Dani's father Matthew expects more help around the house than Dani cares to give. She would rather swim in the pond on the neighboring property, which has stood empty since the Fosters left fifteen years ago. Marie Foster, now a widow, moves back with her three sons, among them seventeen-year-old Court, who has taken charge of the household since his father died. He and Dani meet at the water, and though he treats her as a friend, she wants him to give her a first kiss.
