His wife is in labor, and police major Sergey Sobolev is driving to the hospital in a hurry. He goes too fast on the winter road and hits a boy at a pedestrian crossing, and the boy dies. The only witness is the boy's mother, Irina Gutorova. Sobolev calls colleagues to the scene, and a fellow officer, Pavel Kroshunov, removes the evidence that would show who was driving. The chief of the district police, Aleksey Pavlovich Pankratov, then presses Irina Gutorova to give testimony in Sobolev's favor.
