Plot summary
Revolutionaries in the Combat Group plan to kill the Governor of Moscow as the opening move in toppling the tsarist state. On the Petersburg-Moscow train, a stranger who claims to be the detective Erast Fandorin is admitted to the private car of Adjutant-General Khrapov, and the general is found dead with a knife handle marked BG, the group's sign. Suspicion falls on the real Fandorin, who handles special assignments for the Moscow governor-general. Governor-General Dolgorutsky, facing dismissal over the murder, asks him to find the killers quickly on his own. Fandorin learns that the killers knew who was guarding the general and had a description of him, known to only a small circle in the St. Petersburg police department. General Prince Pozharsky arrives to take charge of the case.
