Plot summary
A year after their split, Paul still broods over Brad, who has moved on with Ted, a former model. Paul runs a successful advertising career, is used to getting what he wants, and is too self-absorbed to beg for a second chance, so he settles on sympathy instead. He clears his doctor's debts, and Burt Halper agrees to diagnose him with cancer and prescribe a treatment that is not real. Word of the illness reaches Brad, who starts coming around to care for him. Paul's mother moves in to nurse her son, and the apartment turns into a makeshift hospital as relatives and friends gather around him.
