Plot summary
Fisher Willow comes back to Memphis from studies overseas because her elderly aunt wants her presented into society. Her father is hated in the city: he blew up part of his levee on purpose, and people died and property was damaged. Fisher's own behavior has left her without an escort, so she offers to pay Jimmy Dobyne, the great-grandson of a former governor whose alcoholic father works for hers and whose mother is in a mental institution, to accompany her through the season. From her aunt she borrows a pair of teardrop diamond earrings worth $10,000. At the first party the band plays jazz at her request and she dances in flapper style; a woman calls her the murderer's daughter, and the guests laugh when she trips on the stairs.
