Plot summary
A woman is found killed on Sunset Boulevard, and Detective Chandler Manning takes the case with a rookie partner, Street Wilkenson. Manning's wife is in an institution after a suicide attempt, and his daughter, Amanda, blames him for it. When a second woman dies, the examiner finds the two deaths follow the first two Jack the Ripper murders, and Manning had arrested someone for a similar spree seven years earlier. In a second thread, Ellen Bunting and her husband, Joe, need money and rent out their guest house to Malcolm Slaight, a writer who insists on complete quiet and whom Joe never sees.
