Plot summary
Malio, a South Pacific island chief, adopts an infant boy found in a canoe beached by a storm, naming him Tama and intending to raise him as his heir. Malio's wife spreads rumors that the child was sent by the trickster god, and after a string of unlucky incidents the chief decides Tama is cursed and sends him away. Tama passes from family to family until the drunkard Pioi takes him in. Pioi's daughter Mahana is thought ugly and is ill-treated, but she remains kind and befriends Tama. Tama builds a canoe and leaves the island, promising Mahana he will return, and a storm carries him to the home of Johnny Lingo, a respected trader.
