Pete Smith
Biography
Pete Smith was a New Zealand actor who began his career on the stage after joining a drama course led by filmmaker Don Selwyn, then appeared in Selwyn's theater productions, including The Gospel according to Taane (1985) and The Maori Merchant of Venice (2002). He made his screen debut in the science fiction film The Quiet Earth (1985), playing Api, a role that won him a GOFTA award. His film work included The Piano (1993), Once Were Warriors (1994), and its sequel What Becomes of the Broken Hearted? (1999), and he appeared as an orc in The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003). On television he appeared in programs such as E Tipu E Rea (1989), Marlin Bay, Plainclothes, Shortland Street, Greenstone, Mataku, and The Market (2005); he won a supporting actor award at the Air New Zealand Screen Awards for The Market. He created, presented, and directed documentary series, including Maramataka: Once Were Gardeners (2007).
