Plot summary
The K.I.K. Corporation is cutting an ice road through the far north of Alaska to reach a drilling site, and Ed Pollack runs the advance camp, reporting to the government on the operation. James Hoffman, the environmental scientist attached to the base, argues that the season is far too warm and that heavy equipment will scar the tundra; Pollack wants the equipment in. A football game outside the housing area ends with Elliot Jenkins bleeding from the nose after a collision with Maxwell McKinder, a rookie whose father is a friend of Pollack. Sent to check one of the drilling sites, Maxwell is gone most of the day and comes back at night shaken, insisting that Hoffman tell the public what is happening in the snow.

- The script for The Last Winter originally showed a woodsy Alaska full of pine trees, but a research trip to Prudhoe Bay revealed harsh, flat conditions that ended up shaping the film.
- Director Larry Fessenden recruited Ron Perlman for the film because of his gruff performance as the title character in Hellboy.
- Fessenden's first idea for the script was a Muslim and a non-Muslim forced to depend on each other in a remote location, and the notion of stranding two people with radically different outlooks ended up in the film's ending.
- The film shot in both Iceland and Alaska; Iceland was chosen because Alaska's film infrastructure was poor, and Canada was ruled out because it was not flat or snowy enough.
