Plot summary
At the end of the Second World War, Captain Joseph Piller, a Dutch Jew who fought in the resistance under the German occupation, works for the Canadian military administration in the Netherlands. A tip leads him to a Vermeer found in Austria in Hermann Goering's collection, and he and his aide Dekker arrest Han van Meegeren, an artist and dealer accused of collaborating with the enemy and financing an Abwehr espionage network. Dutch authorities led by De Klerks want custody of Han, and Piller, fearing a postwar hunt for collaborators, moves him to a safehouse instead. There Han asks for canvas and painting materials and tells Piller about his origins, including how art critics dismissed his own paintings before the war.
