Plot summary

In self-imposed exile in Albufeira, a southern Portuguese fishing village, Harry Garmes keeps a boat and has not worked in nine years. His wife left him after their son died, and Monique, a local prostitute, is the company he sometimes seeks. Then a job arrives: take Paul Rickard, who broke out of a Spanish prison, and Rickard's girlfriend Claudie Scherrer out of Portugal, across Spain and into France. Harry accepts as a chance to prove he can still make the grade, though he has a premonition it will end badly, and he gives Monique money to hold, hers to keep if he does not come back. The three set out in a BMW 503 fitted with a hidden compartment and a supercharger.
