Plot summary
Two years before Deokhye is born, Japanese soldiers surround Gwangbokgung Palace, and Japanese officials inside the palace compel the Korean cabinet to approve the annexation of Korea by the Japanese Empire. Deokhye grows up as the youngest child and only daughter of Emperor Gojong and the last princess of the Joseon dynasty. In 1925, with Korea under Japanese rule, the thirteen-year-old is forced to leave her homeland and her family and travel to Japan to attend school. She misses home, and after her schooling ends she tries repeatedly to go back. General Han Taek-soo, the pro-Japanese general, thwarts each attempt.
